51st Anniversary of Independence of MALDIVES

Consulate of Maldives in Thiruvananthapuram organized a reception to mark 51st anniversary of Independence of Maldives. Maldives became protectorate of British Crown in 1887 under a protection agreement in which Sultan accepted British influence over Maldives external relations and defense. However, due to British crowns overpowering influence in internal affairs of the Maldives, the then Prime Minister in 1955 called for the review of the understanding. This lead to the beginning of early talks and discussions with British to draft new agreement that gave independence to the Maldives. The Maldives was represented in these discussions by the then High Commissioner of Maldives in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Hon Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi. The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Sumuvul Ameer Ibrahim Nasir, KCMG (Knight Commander of Her Majesty’s Government) Rannabadeyri Kilege Faanu on 26 July 1965 in West Minister House, Ceylon. Since then 26 July is considered as a public holiday and marked as the Independence Day of Maldives.
